Bake Shop Bakery Banana Nut Sliced Loaf Cake (Aldi)

Image
Your tolerance for this will depend on your tolerance for fake banana flavor. I felt like I struck the jackpot on my latest Aldi shopping trip: I had never seen so many red “dollar off” stickers in my entire life. The Aldi I go to - which was the only one in our suburban city for years, until they opened up another one a couple years ago in a much higher traffic area - is almost always slow. As a result, it seems that they rarely put Special Buy items on clearance, or mark items down, at least compared to other locations I’ve been to. So when I see anything marked down at our store, I’m usually pretty quick to act.  First impressions: this is described on the packaging as a “sliced loaf cake”, yet it looks like banana bread. So, what exactly is this? It looks like banana bread, and it’s cut like banana bread, so I’m just going to assume it’s some weird way it’s made that prevents it from being designated as “bread”. Or, maybe, is all banana bread technically loaf cakes?  I don’t like m

Bake Shop Bakery Chocolate Chip Sandwich Cookies (Aldi)

One of the rare times that red sticker has still ended up in disappointment. Believe it or not based on my review history, but I’m not all that huge into sweets. Naturally, however, our four-year-old son is, so I always have an excuse to buy sweet things and pretend like they're for him on the rare occasion something tickles my fancy. And the latest target were these Bake Shop Bakery Chocolate Chip Sandwich cookies, which were available at Aldi as a Special Buy (and for a whole $1 off, which is what sealed the deal). They were a little on the expensive side, and also contained way more cookies than the average person would need...this is more like a party size, I would say. Sure, each cookie is small, but do you see how much icing is packed inside each one? I can’t see even the biggest fan of sweets being able to down more than one of these without throwing up.  I was hoping my wife would be interested in trying one, too, but she could already tell it would be too sugary for her. Elevation Mixed Berry Electrolyte + Vitamin Drink Mix Sticks (Aldi)

Image
Not sure I dig this overly minimalist packaging... A few months back, Aldi quietly added some new variants to their “Fit & Active” line of drink mix sticks (at least, I think it was quiet; I saw no advanced notice about them anywhere until I saw the product in stores). Marketed under the “Elevation” banner - their brand of health bars and other supplements - these “Electrolyte + Vitamin” drinks purport to offer just that: a mix of electrolyte and vitamins. Only in portable drink mix stick form. And for about the same price as their other "non-electrolyte + vitamin" drink mixes. Who can complain about that? I grabbed “Mixed Berry”, both because I liked the color of the packaging (blue), and because it sounded like it would be the best flavor. Speaking of the packaging, I can’t tell if its minimalism is sleek, or annoying; I feel like it straddles the line between both. The more I look at it, I think I’m leaning toward the “sleek” side: it really stands out among other Aldi

Simply Nature Sea Salt Roasted Seaweed Snacks (Aldi)

Image
These are either the Asian equivalent to potato chips, or rice cakes.  Man will eat anything. I don’t think I need to explain myself any further, but just in case you’re in doubt, here we have some roasted seaweed snacks, which are a big thing in Asian continents, but not something that has really caught on here. (I’m completely assuming, but they seem to be like an alternative to potato chips over there, with brands offering up seaweed snacks in a variety of different flavors.) I mean, who was the first person to look at seaweed and think: "I'll bet if I roasted that, it would taste good"? Inside are roughly ten paper-thin pieces of seaweed, which smell...earthy. Earthy with a strong side of salt. The seaweed is packed in a plastic tray which is the only recyclable part of this whole package...okay “Simply Nature”, we see you. The taste is...very salty. That’s about it. There’s a little undercurrent of “green earthiness” underneath, which I could see being very off-putt

Elevation Energy Wild Strawberry Drink Mix with Caffeine (Aldi)

Image
A useful mix of "wild" strawberry flavor and caffeine. Because I hate the blandness of water so much, I’m a sucker for drink mixes. And because I like getting kicks of energy - mainly because I have to be at work at 6 a.m. - I also enjoy caffeine. In the olden days, I used to have to use two separate products to get what I needed, but now thanks to advancements in technology, I can use one powder to get both! Ain’t technology grand? Even though I know I’m not writing a peer-reviewed scientific journal, I’m going to mention that I am out of “full size” (16.9 oz.) bottles of water and instead have to use a smaller 8 oz. bottle for the sake of this review. This means I am cutting the amount of powder down by half, to my best estimates. This might cause the flavor to be a little bit weaker or stronger than usual (depending on in what direction I err), but this will give me the basic gist, either way. The smell definitely hints at something “wild”, with a strawberry smell that re
