Unbranded Strong and Soft Toilet Paper (Dollar Tree)

A package of Dollar Tree's Unbranded Strong and Soft Toilet Paper, sitting on a shelf
It's a good toilet paper at a great price point.

There are few things more divisive in our house than toilet paper. I believe I have mentioned in previous reviews that my wife virtually requires her toilet paper to be cushiony-soft, whereas my main requirement is that my hand doesn’t poke through it in mid-use. Although I will say my rather lax standards have somehow still been let down a couple of times before, I still maintain that, as long as it’s not like using sandpaper, I don’t really care how “soft” it is.

So it should come as no surprise that Dollar Tree has a cheap, basic toilet paper option that’s always available (another disease outbreak notwithstanding), and it should also come as no surprise that, while it’s far from perfect, it’s still one of my standard go-tos when I need to stock up.

I guess right from the packaging comes its first knock: no brand name. I can’t stand it when items don’t have a brand name associated with them. How hard would it be to just slap on a little name in the upper-left corner of the packaging? “The Home Store” would fit the bill, as they also offer a (rather terrible) large single roll toilet paper under that banner, although anything would be better than nothing. I don’t know why this irks me so, but it just screams “cheap” when there’s no brand name associated with it; whether or not it’s true, I don’t want to be reminded of it every time I look at the package.

Each roll looks uniform, something that I can’t say about other cheap brands I’ve tried, and is wound pretty tight around the cardboard roll. It unwinds and tears easily, so you never have to worry about issues arising during dire toilet paper emergencies, the likes of which we have all experienced at one time or another, and for a variety of reasons that I will leave entirely up to your imagination.

Performancewise, I do have to say that it definitely rises above its generic appearance, to deliver a toilet paper experience that at the very least matches its cost, if not slightly exceeding it. No, you’re not going to get a velvety soft toilet paper with your hard-earned dollar, but you will get a 2-ply TP that’s a lot softer than the typical junk you’ll find in gas station restrooms, and one that should satisfy most tushes.

Maybe best of all: it holds up well in everyday use. I have used it, off and on, for a few years now, and have never had it rip or tear in mid-use. Granted, I haven’t really tested the limits of the “strong” in its title, and don’t really care to, but it’s up for all the “basic” functions for which you will presumably be using toilet paper.

Unless you require your private areas to be caressed by a cloud, like my wife does, this should satisfy your needs, and at a very reasonable price.

Overall: 7/10. It won’t wow you with a velvety touch, but for a buck, this is a perfectly serviceable toilet paper for everyday use. It comes off the roll with no problems, and is sturdy enough to handle any standard bathroom task: I’ve used it, off and on, for a few years now, and I’ve never had it tear in mid-use. The rolls are a little smaller than other brands (more akin to a “standard” size roll) and you can probably find better deals elsewhere on larger packages, but it’s a reliable choice for a buck. If nothing else, it’s great to have on hand as a backup option.

  1. I actually prefer this TP over the brand names. It's the only one I've found (brand names included) that didn't shred my asshole.

    1. Haha, I completely understand that! It's my go-to brand for my man cave bathroom - a solid balance of performance and semi-comfort. Not the softest out there, but I've never had problems with it tearing. Way better than Aldi's basic TP.
